Batteries and toners require specialist handling and should never be disposed of as general waste. Due to the emissions they generate, sending these to landfill to rot will result in air, ground water and soil pollution caused by the leaking of highly toxic chemicals. Landfill disposal will not only threaten the ecosystems and harm the environment, our Earth’s precious natural resources will be further depleted in the manufacture of new batteries and toners. Producing a new laser cartridge for example, requires almost five litres of oil together with other valuable elements. Recycling is also more cost-effective than using virgin materials to produce new batteries and toners and can ultimately reduce the manufacturing costs, benefiting the end-user in the retail chain, especially for companies who regularly expend a high volume of these items.
